On the majority of vehicles the trunk is not opened directly. The cabin is opened, and the trunk is then released from the interior button, the key fob, or the fold-down seat. That route is faster and much gentler on the vehicle than attacking the trunk lock itself.

The awkward versions are the ones with no interior release, a flat battery disabling the electric release, or a rear seat that does not fold. Those are worth naming on the phone, because they change both the method and the time.

What makes it easy or hard

• Is there an interior release? A button in the cabin or a lever near the driver's seat makes this straightforward.
• Do the rear seats fold? A fold-down or ski-hatch gives direct access without touching any lock.
• Is the battery flat? Electric trunk releases stop working, which forces a mechanical route.
• Is the trunk lock itself jammed or seized? That is a repair rather than a lockout.
• Is the key inside the trunk? Then a key may need making regardless of how the lid gets opened.

• Year, make and model, and body style — saloon, hatchback, estate or SUV.
• Whether the rear seats fold down.
