Lost Car Key Replacement

The 'all keys lost' job — where nothing can be copied, so the key has to be derived from the car itself.

There is a real difference between losing a key and losing your only key. With a spare somewhere, this is a duplication job. With nothing at all, the key must be originated: the cutting information is read from the vehicle, a blank is cut to it, and the new key is then programmed to the immobiliser from scratch.

That is why 'all keys lost' takes longer and asks more of you. It is also why proof of ownership is non-negotiable — the process ends with a working key to a car, and no reputable locksmith will do that on trust.

What happens on an all-keys-lost job

Ownership is established first. Registration or title in your name plus photo ID is the usual standard.
The key code or cutting data is obtained from the vehicle — sometimes from a door lock, sometimes from the vehicle's own records.
A blank of the correct type is cut to that data.
The new key is programmed to the immobiliser, and where you ask for it, previously known keys are erased.
The key is tested in the doors, the ignition and — where fitted — the trunk release.

Have this ready

Registration or title showing your name, and photo ID.
Year, make, model and trim of the vehicle.
Where the vehicle is parked, and whether it can be reached with a work vehicle alongside.
Whether the keys were lost or stolen — it changes whether old keys should be erased.
Whether the car has been sitting long enough for the battery to go flat.

Common questions

My keys were stolen rather than lost. Is that different?

Practically, yes. Ask for the old keys to be erased from the immobiliser during programming so the stolen key cannot start the car. Consider that the thief may also have your address from documents in the vehicle, which is a house rekeying conversation as well.

Do I need to be there?

Yes. Ownership has to be verified in person against ID, and the vehicle has to be accessible for the whole job.

Can this be done for any vehicle?

For most, but not all. A small number of makes and model years restrict key origination to franchised dealers. That gets identified from the year, make and model on the phone, before anyone is dispatched.
