Locksmith work splits into four families that use different tools, different skills and often different parts of the vehicle. Access work gets you back in. Security work changes who can get in. Hardware work fixes or replaces the physical lock. Key work creates a key that did not exist.
Most callers arrive believing they need one thing and leave having needed another — usually because a lockout turns out to be a broken cylinder, or a 'lost key' turns out to be a rekey. The pages below describe what each job really involves so the choice is made before anyone is dispatched.
The four families
- Emergency and access — lockouts, broken keys, doors that will not open, and damage after a break-in. Time-sensitive, and usually solvable without replacing hardware.
- Residential — rekeying, lock changes, deadbolts, smart locks, keypads, and everything on a house that turns.
- Commercial — master key systems, access control, panic hardware, door closers, storefront and office locks, and multi-unit property work.
- Automotive — car keys and fobs, transponders, ignitions, trunk and door lockouts, and keys made when none exists.
If you are not sure which one you need
- Locked out with the key inside or lost — start with emergency and access.
- Key exists and works, but you want it to stop working — that is rekeying, not replacement.
- Lock feels wrong, sticks, spins or grinds — that is repair, and it needs to be seen.
- A car is involved at any point — start with automotive, because the vehicle decides the method.
- More than one door, or more than one person holding keys — that is a commercial system question.

Common questions
Do you do all of these from one vehicle?
Not simultaneously. A mobile setup is stocked for the job it is dispatched to. Residential rekeying, automotive key origination and commercial access control need different equipment on board, which is why the description you give before dispatch matters more than it might seem.
Which service is most commonly mis-chosen?
Rekeying versus replacement. People who have lost a key often ask for new locks, when rekeying the existing cylinders achieves the same security outcome and keeps hardware that is working perfectly well. Replacement is the right call when the hardware itself is failing or you want a different grade of lock.
Can several of these be done in one visit?
Often, yes — rekeying every exterior door and adding a deadbolt is one visit, not three. Say up front everything you want looked at, because the parts needed are decided before the vehicle leaves.
