A car lockout is an access job rather than a hardware job. The lock is fine, the key is fine, and the only task is getting a door open without harming the vehicle. On most cars that is done from the outside using tools that reach the interior mechanism, and nothing is left needing repair afterwards.
Two details change the picture. If a child or a pet is inside, this stops being a locksmith call and becomes an emergency services call — make that call first. And if the key is not merely inside but genuinely lost, opening the door only solves half the problem.
What decides how it is opened
- Where the key actually is. Visible on the seat is a different job from lost somewhere in a car park.
- Whether the car is locked or just latched. Some vehicles auto-lock after a period, and some do not.
- Frameless windows and modern seals change which method is safe on that vehicle.
- Whether the alarm is armed, because it will very likely sound and someone has to be there to deal with it.
- Whether anyone is inside. A person or animal in a hot vehicle is an emergency-services call before it is a locksmith one.
Have this ready
- Year, make and model.
- Whether the key is inside, lost, or broken.
- Exactly where the vehicle is, including the level of any structure.
- Proof that the vehicle is yours — registration, insurance card or ID matching the paperwork.
- Whether anyone or any animal is inside the vehicle right now.

Common questions
Will opening the car damage the door or weatherstrip?
It should not. Modern non-destructive methods work through the door gap with protective wedges. Damage is a risk when people attempt it themselves with coat hangers and screwdrivers, which is what usually causes the bent frames locksmiths get called to afterwards.
Can you open the car if the battery is dead?
Yes — a mechanical opening does not depend on the vehicle's electrics. If the doors are electrically locked and the battery is flat, that is still a mechanical entry to the door latch.
My keys are locked in the trunk, not the cabin.
Usually the cabin is opened first and the trunk released from inside, which is the least invasive route. Vehicles with no interior trunk release are the harder case and are worth mentioning on the phone.
