Car Key Fob Replacement

A fob that has stopped working is usually a battery, sometimes a cracked case, and only occasionally a genuinely dead remote. Because a replacement fob is one of the more expensive items in automotive locksmithing, working through that order honestly saves real money.

When replacement is the answer, the fob has to be both cut — most still carry a mechanical blade, even proximity keys with a hidden emergency blade — and paired to the vehicle. A fob that has not been paired is an expensive piece of plastic.

Check these first, in this order

• The battery. A coin cell costs very little and accounts for most dead fobs. Range dropping off gradually before failing is the classic sign.
• The case. Cracked shells let the board flex and break solder joints at the buttons. A reshell is much cheaper than a new fob.
• The buttons themselves. Worn rubber contacts fail one button at a time — if lock works and unlock does not, the radio is fine.
• Interference. Fobs that fail only in one car park or near one building are being jammed, not dying.
• The vehicle side. If no fob works, including a spare, the receiver rather than the remote is the suspect.

Have this ready

• Year, make, model and trim.
• The existing fob, even if dead — the part number inside is useful.
• How many fobs you own and how many you want working afterwards.
• Whether the hidden emergency blade in the fob still opens the driver's door.
• Proof of ownership.
