Picking a smart lock that suits the door
Retrofit units replace only the inside thumb-turn and keep your existing deadbolt and key. Full replacements swap the whole lock and add a keypad outside. Wi-Fi models do not need a hub; Bluetooth and Zigbee or Z-Wave models pair with a hub or bridge. Door thickness, backset and whether the door has a working deadbolt already decide which is the right fit.
Why installation alignment matters
A smart lock motor has limited torque. If the bolt drags on a misaligned strike the lock reports jams and drains batteries. The strike is adjusted and the door checked so the bolt throws freely by hand before the electronics are trusted with it.
