Key Fob Programming
A fob you already own is often programmable — the question is whether it has ever been paired to another car.

Programming is the handshake between a remote and the vehicle. Until it happens, a fob is inert: the buttons press, the battery is fine, and the car ignores it completely. That is why a correctly cut key bought online can fit the lock perfectly and still do nothing useful.
Whether your existing fob can be programmed depends mostly on its history. A genuinely new, never-paired fob of the right part number is usually straightforward. One that has already lived on another vehicle is, on many makes, permanently married to it and cannot be reused no matter how identical it looks.
What determines whether a fob can be paired
- Part compatibility — the correct frequency and chip type for that year, make and model, not merely a fob that looks the same.
- Whether it has been paired before. Many makes lock a fob to the first vehicle that accepts it.
- How many slots the vehicle has. Some cars accept a limited number of keys and must have one erased before another is added.
- Whether an existing working key is present, which on some vehicles makes the procedure far shorter.
- Battery health on both sides — a weak vehicle battery interrupts programming, and a weak fob cell prevents pairing.
Have this ready
- Year, make, model and trim.
- The fob to be programmed, plus every fob you already own.
- Whether the fob is new, second hand, or was previously used on another vehicle.
- How many working keys you want at the end of the visit.
- Proof of ownership.
If the buttons no longer respond at all and the fob has been dropped or soaked, replacing the remote comes before programming it. see car key fob replacement.
Common questions
I bought a fob online. Can you program it?
Often, if it is the correct part for the vehicle and has never been paired to another car. Bring the packaging or the part number if you have it, because a wrong-frequency fob cannot be made to work no matter how well it fits the hand.
Can I program a fob myself using an online procedure?
A few older vehicles do have an owner procedure involving the ignition and door switches, and where one exists it is worth trying. Most vehicles from the last fifteen years require equipment that talks to the immobiliser directly.
Will programming a new fob cancel my old ones?
On some vehicles it can, and on others it adds to the existing set. Say how many keys you need working afterwards, because the procedure is chosen accordingly.
