Types of car keys

Basic mechanical keys on older vehicles are cut to code from the VIN or by decoding the lock. Transponder keys carry a chip that must be programmed to the immobiliser before the engine will start. Remote-head keys and smart fobs combine the chip with remote or push-to-start functions and need programming equipment matched to the vehicle. High-security laser-cut (sidewinder) blades need a specialist cutter that a well-equipped van carries.

Lost all keys vs. making a spare

Making a spare from a working key is the quick, cheap version. An all-keys-lost job is more involved: the lock is decoded or the key code pulled from the VIN, a blade is cut, and the immobiliser is programmed so the lost keys are erased and the new one works. Most vehicles are handled on site; a small number of very new or exotic models require a dealer part and you are told that up front.

Typical ranges: basic mechanical keys $75 to $150, transponder keys $150 to $300, smart keys and proximity fobs $250 to $500 or more depending on the make. A spare made from an existing key costs less than an all-keys-lost replacement. Ask for the total before work begins.
