Cupertino is not one housing stock, and the lock on the door tells you which part of town you are standing in. Rancho Rinconada, east of De Anza Boulevard, is a tight grid of small single-storey tract houses built out as one development, so a whole street can be carrying the same era of knob set. Monta Vista, west of Stevens Creek Boulevard and closer to the foothills, is older and far more piecemeal, full of additions and side doors that were never on the same key as the front.
Then there is the Fairgrove tract off Tantau Avenue, where the Eichler front doors are wide, flat and thinner than a modern exterior slab, often with an atrium gate in front of them and a glass wall beside them. Hardware sized for a standard door does not automatically suit those, and the thickness and backset are worth measuring before anything is ordered. Higher up, above Regnart Road and Lindy Lane, the problem changes again: long private driveways, gates, and a work vehicle that has to be told exactly where to stop.
What changes the job around Cupertino
- Rancho Rinconada tract houses. Small lots, an attached garage and a side door out to the yard, which is the door most often left off the main key.
- Eichler and mid-century flat doors around Fairgrove and Tantau Avenue, where the door thickness and the backset decide what will physically fit before taste does.
- Foothill properties off Regnart Road, Lindy Lane and Prospect Road, where a gate or a long private drive has to be described before anyone sets off.
- Rentals near De Anza College and along Stevens Creek Boulevard, which change hands often enough that nobody can account for every key that was ever cut.
- Sliding glass doors onto a patio — close to universal on the ranch stock here, and the factory latch on them is usually the weakest thing on the house.
Useful to have ready when you call
- The nearest cross street, since Homestead Road, Stevens Creek Boulevard and Bollinger Road all run the length of the city.
- Whether the property sits closer to Highway 85 or to Interstate 280, because that decides the approach.
- How many exterior doors there are, counting the garage side door and any gate.
- Whether the door is a standard thickness or one of the thinner mid-century slabs.
- Whether any key is unaccounted for, including one held by a former tenant or a contractor.

Common questions
Do you cover the Monta Vista and Seven Springs sides of town?
Yes, and the real difference between them is access rather than lock type. Monta Vista streets are narrow and many houses have no driveway apron to work from, while Seven Springs and the newer courts off Bollinger Road are simple to park at. Say which side you are on and roughly which cross street, because that is what decides the approach.
My house is one of the Eichlers. Is that a problem?
Not a problem, but worth mentioning early. Those doors are thinner than a modern exterior slab, frequently have a narrow stile beside a glass panel, and sometimes carry a backset outside the usual range. Knowing that before hardware is selected is what avoids a second trip for a different lock.
Can a key be made for a car parked at De Anza College or in a company lot?
Usually, provided the vehicle is reachable and you can show it is yours. The cutting and programming happen at the car, so the only genuine constraint is whether a work vehicle can get alongside it. A multi-level structure is fine as long as you say which level.
Every house on my street looks identical. Does that matter for security?
It matters more than people expect on a tract built as a single job. Hardware fitted at the same time from the same supply means neighbours find their keys interchange rather more often than chance would suggest, and rekeying is the cheap answer to that.
