Access control replaces the mechanical question of who holds a key with an administrative one: who is on the list. A credential is presented at a reader, a controller decides, and an electric locking device releases. The value is not that it resists force better than a good cylinder — it is that access can be withdrawn in seconds without visiting a door, and that the system can say when a door was opened and by whom.
That comes with obligations. Every electrically locked door needs a defined behaviour when power fails, a way for a person inside to leave that does not depend on the system at all, and somewhere sensible for the controller and power supply to live. Those three things are where most retrofits go wrong, and all three are decided before anything is mounted on a wall.
The decisions a survey makes at each door
- Fail-safe or fail-secure. On loss of power, does the lock release or stay locked? On egress and stair doors that is answered by the building's fire strategy rather than by preference.
- The locking device — an electric strike in the frame, an electrified lock body, or a magnetic lock, each changing the door prep and the wiring involved.
- Free egress. Somebody inside must be able to leave in one motion whatever the system is doing, which normally means mechanical hardware that works unpowered plus a request-to-exit device.
- Credential type — card, fob, phone or PIN — and whether the older card format already circulating in the building can be read at all.
- Where power and the controller live, and what happens during an outage, including whether the door keeps its cardholder list when it comes back.
Worth deciding before a quote
- Which doors genuinely need control, and which only need a decent mechanical lock.
- How many people hold credentials, and how often that list changes.
- Whether access needs to vary by time of day or by day of the week.
- Whether you need a record of openings, or only the ability to remove one person quickly.
- Whether the building already has cabling, an alarm panel, or a landlord system you must sit alongside.

Common questions
Does access control mean we can throw the keys away?
No, and you should not want to. Almost every controlled door keeps a mechanical override so the building can be entered when power, network or controller has failed. The keys stop being the daily method and become the exception path, which means they still need to be controlled rather than forgotten in a drawer.
What is a request-to-exit device?
It is the sensor or switch that tells the system somebody is leaving legitimately, so the door opening from inside is not read as a forced door. It is usually a motion sensor above the opening or a switch built into the exit hardware. It is not what lets you out — the mechanical hardware does that — it is what stops the alarm.
Are magnetic locks a problem?
They need careful handling, because a maglock holds only while it is powered. That makes the egress arrangement and the fire alarm interface part of the installation rather than an afterthought. A maglock on a door people must be able to leave through, without a properly arranged release path, is the classic mistake in this trade.
Can access control be added without running cable everywhere?
Partly. Battery powered locks with a wireless link cover interior doors well and avoid cutting frames. Exterior doors, heavy traffic and anything tied into a fire alarm generally still want wired power, because a battery change at a main entrance is the maintenance task everyone forgets to schedule.
