A house lockout is an access problem rather than a hardware problem. The lock works, the key works, and the only thing wrong is which side of the door the key is on. That framing sets the expectation for the whole job: the door gets opened, nothing needs replacing, and you should still be using the same key at the end of it.
How straightforward it is comes down to which mechanism is actually holding the door shut. A spring latch that pulled closed behind you is a different object from a deadbolt you turned with a key, and a multipoint door that was lifted and locked is different again. Saying which one it is turns an unknown job into a known one before anyone sets off.
What decides how the door gets opened
- Which lock is doing the work. A door that simply pulled shut is held by a sprung latch. A door you locked with a key is held by a deadbolt that is going nowhere on its own. Those are opened by different means and they take different lengths of time.
- What the door is made of and how it is hung. A timber slab in a wooden frame, a composite or uPVC door with a locking strip down its edge, and a steel security screen standing in front of the real door are three separate problems wearing the same coat.
- Whether anything is engaged from the inside. A chain, a bolt at the head of the door, or a snib that only turns from within means somebody set it while they were in the house, which changes the question from access to who else is involved.
- Whether the house is genuinely sealed. A back door, a garage side door, a sash left off the catch, or a bathroom window on a vent stay are worth walking round for first. People find one more often than they expect to.
- Whether a person or an animal is shut inside. A small child, an older relative who cannot reach the door, or a pet in a house that is heating up is an emergency-services call before it is a locksmith one.
Worth having before you call
- How many locks are on the door, and whether the upper one is a deadbolt you turned with a key.
- Whether you pulled the door shut behind you or deliberately locked it.
- Whether a spare sits with a neighbour, a partner, a relative, a landlord or a letting agent, since a few phone calls sometimes end this faster than any tool.
- Something connecting you to the address: photo ID, addressed mail, a lease, or somebody who can vouch for you.
- Whether you rent, because a landlord may already hold a key and will usually want to know about any hardware change.

Common questions
Is the door or the lock likely to be damaged?
For an ordinary residential cylinder, no. The usual methods work the lock rather than the door, and nothing needs replacing afterwards. The exceptions are worth naming: a high-security cylinder built to resist exactly this, a lock that is already forced or mechanically seized, and a door somebody has been levering at before help arrived.
Can I get in myself with a card or a coat hanger?
That is not something anyone should be talked through, and the reason is practical rather than coy. It only ever applied to a plain spring latch, it does nothing whatsoever to a thrown deadbolt, and the attempts mark the door edge, bend the latch and split the stop. The carpentry afterwards is the part nobody mentions online.
The building's front entrance is locked as well as my unit.
Those are two doors with two different owners. A common entrance belongs to the building, so opening it is the property manager's decision and not yours, and a locksmith should decline until that is settled. Your own unit door is yours to authorise, so start by reaching whoever holds responsibility for the common areas.
What if my ID still shows an old address?
That is extremely common and it is not a dead end. Addressed mail in your name, a tenancy agreement, a utility bill, or a landlord or neighbour willing to confirm you by phone all serve the purpose. The point is establishing a genuine connection to the address, not producing one particular document.
