An assessment is a walk around the outside of a house looking at every point where a door meets a frame, followed by an honest accounting of the keys attached to those doors. It is deliberately unglamorous work, because the weaknesses that actually get used are boring ones: a short screw, a shallow strike pocket, a side door nobody thinks about, a key handed over in a hurry and never retrieved.
The output that matters is a ranked list rather than a shopping list. Most homes have two or three changes that meaningfully move the outcome and a dozen that make no measurable difference at all, and separating those is the whole reason to have somebody look.
What the walk round covers
- Strike fixings. Short screws hold the strike plate to the jamb trim, and the jamb trim is a thin board. Screws long enough to reach the framing behind it change how much force the door survives more than any upgrade to the lock does.
- How far the bolt actually travels into the frame when thrown, measured rather than assumed, because a bolt stopped short by a shallow pocket is doing a fraction of the work it was built for.
- Glass near a thumbturn, whether in the door itself or in a sidelight beside it, which quietly turns a deadbolt into a lock that opens from outside through one small broken pane.
- The doors nobody names — garage side door, garage to house door, a basement hatch, a back gate — which are consistently the weakest openings on a property and the last ones anyone upgrades.
- The key inventory: hidden keys, keys with people no longer in your life, keys given to trades and never returned, and whether any of it can honestly be accounted for.
Think about these before the walk round
- Every way into the property, including the ones you never use.
- Whether anyone in the household needs to get out quickly without hunting for a key first.
- Whether keys have ever gone missing, and whether anything happened afterwards.
- Whether a previous owner, a tenant, an agent or a contractor could still be holding a copy.
- Whether you rent, since some of the changes need the owner's agreement and some do not.

Common questions
What single change makes the biggest difference?
Reinforcing where the bolt lands. Most forced residential entries split the jamb rather than defeat the lock, so long screws reaching the framing and a solid strike box achieve more than swapping a working deadbolt for a fancier one. It is also the change nobody can see from the street.
Do I need high security locks at home?
Rarely as a first step. High security cylinders answer picking, drilling and unauthorised key copying, and those are not what happens to most houses. They earn their place once the door and frame are sound and key control has become a real concern.
Is a key hidden outside ever acceptable?
The hiding places people choose are the ones checked first, and a key found outside defeats every lock on the property at once. If somebody genuinely needs occasional access, a code on a keypad you can change afterwards, or a key held by a neighbour, both solve it without leaving anything outside.
Does the assessment cover windows and alarms?
The locking hardware on doors, gates and reachable openings is what a locksmith can speak to properly. Alarms, cameras and monitoring belong to a different trade, and the honest thing is to say where they would help rather than sell them alongside the locks.
