Ford key replacement covers three different jobs that get lumped under one name: cutting a mechanical blade to open the door and turn the ignition, programming a transponder chip so the engine control unit will start the car, and — on newer trims — pairing a proximity smart key. What changed and when

1996-1998 is the rough dividing line for most Ford models: Ford's PATS transponder immobilizer became standard across most models between 1996 and 1998, with proximity/push-button start keys following on many trims from the mid-2000s onward. A key that only needs cutting is the simplest and fastest job; one that also needs transponder or smart-key programming takes longer because the vehicle's own security system has to accept the new key, not just turn a lock.

Cutting, transponder and smart-key jobs are different work

A mechanical cut alone — matching the blade's shape to the ignition or door lock — is the simplest and fastest of the three. A transponder key adds a chip inside the plastic head that has to be paired to the car's engine control unit before the engine will start; getting the shape right and getting the chip accepted are two separate steps, and a key that turns but the car does not start is almost always a transponder-pairing gap, not a cutting mistake. A proximity smart key goes a step further: it talks to the car over short-range radio instead of being inserted at all, so pairing it involves the car's keyless-entry module rather than the ignition cylinder. Naming which of the three a given Ford actually needs before dispatch — rather than assuming "a key" means the same job every time — is most of what keeps a mobile visit to one trip instead of two.
