An emergency lock repair is defined by the state of the door rather than by how urgent it feels. If the door cannot be closed and locked as things stand, the opening is unsecured and it does not keep until Monday. If it can be closed and locked but does it badly, that is a repair you are allowed to schedule around your week.
The first goal on this kind of call is a door that latches and locks tonight. The correct permanent hardware often follows separately, because a matched handle set, a cylinder in the right length and finish, or a gearbox for one specific door profile is not something any vehicle carries in every variation. Ask which parts are temporary and which are final, and get that distinction in plain words.
The failures that leave a door unsecured
- The handle turns and the latch stays out. A sheared spindle or a broken return spring, so the handle spins freely and the latch no longer retracts or springs back. The door will not close cleanly and cannot be relied on to stay shut.
- The cylinder turns and the bolt does not. The cam or tailpiece connecting the cylinder to the lock case has failed. From outside the key feels entirely normal, which is exactly what makes this one easy to miss until the door swings open on its own.
- The bolt throws but the door still pushes open. The bolt is no longer landing where it should. Either the door has dropped on its hinges or the strike has torn out of the jamb, and the lock itself may be in perfect condition.
- A multipoint door that will not lift and lock. The gearbox inside the edge strip has failed, so lifting the handle achieves nothing and the hooks never engage. These are door-specific parts and the most common reason a repair takes two visits.
- A fire or exit door that no longer latches. This is not only a security question. A door on an escape route that will not close and latch has stopped doing its other job, and that one matters at a far worse moment.
Have this ready
- Whether the door can be closed at all, or is standing open right now.
- What the door is: a timber slab, a composite or uPVC door with a locking strip down the edge, an aluminium storefront, or a hollow metal fire door.
- Whether the failure happened during normal use or after force was applied to the door.
- Photographs of the damage taken before anything is touched, if anyone else will need to see it later.
- Whether this door has been repaired before, and what was done to it last time.

Common questions
Can it actually be fixed tonight, or only made safe?
Both outcomes are normal and which one you get depends on the part. Cylinders, latches, strikes and common handle sets are the sort of thing a stocked vehicle can finish on the spot. Multipoint gearboxes, suites in a particular finish, and anything glazed usually mean securing the opening now and returning with the part.
The lock is fine but the door has dropped and now binds.
Then the lock is the victim rather than the culprit. Hinge screws pull loose in soft jamb timber, the hinges themselves wear, and a heavy door sags until the bolt starts scraping on its way through. Refitting the hinges into sound material or moving the strike solves it, and replacing the lock would have solved nothing.
Is a temporary fix money wasted?
It is the difference between an open doorway and a locked one overnight, so it is rarely wasted. What you should insist on is knowing exactly what is temporary, what the permanent repair involves, and when it happens, so the interim measure does not quietly become the finished job.
The lock has failed with somebody shut inside.
If anybody cannot get out of a room or a building, and particularly a child, an older person, or anyone unwell, call emergency services first. A jammed exit is a safety problem before it is a hardware problem, and a locksmith is the right call only once nobody is at risk behind the door.
